Zen Bow, Spring/Summer 2023

The latest issue of Zen Bow is available here. (Hard copies will be printed and mailed to those who have requested them within the next few weeks.)

Founder’s Day: Roshi Philip Kapleau’s Birthday

This Sunday, August 20, as part of our annual remembrance of Kapleau-roshi, who was born August 20, 1912, we’ll have our usual 8:30 am sitting at Arnold Park and then listen to a recording of one of his teishos. New this year: a photo slideshow in the Link and a special brunch with a PK-inspired icebreaker activity!

Parent Practice

The next Parenting Support Group will meet Monday, August 21, at 8:15 pm on Zoom. The main topic will be school readiness, preparation, and routines, and how to support your child’s return to school. Many kids experience anxiety (and sometimes sadness) around this transition from summer. Many adults do, too! For more information, contact the group’s facilitator, Susan Rakow. Please include your email address, phone number, and the ages of your children.
Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other caregivers are welcome as well. We meet monthly on the last Monday evening of the month, working around the sesshin schedule.

Other Upcoming Activities

Dokusan Schedule Next Week

There are two more dokusan opportunities – both at Arnold Park – before the Center’s two-week break. Dhara-sensei will offer dokusan on Monday evening, and John-sensei on Tuesday evening. The Tuesday-evening sitting is the last before the Center’s summer break.

Summer Break

The Center will be closed for its summer break from August 23 through September 5. However, we’ll continue to hold sittings on Zoom as follows:
Monday – Saturday 7:00 am – 8:00 am
Sundays                         8:30 am – 9:30 am
Monday – Friday     7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

In addition, the Arnold Park zendo will be open for members to come and sit informally, and several staff members will remain in residence during the break. The zendo at Chapin Mill, however, won’t be open during the break because of rentals.

Our regular schedule of formal in-person sittings and Zen training at Arnold Park and Chapin Mill will resume on Wednesday, September 6, with morning zazen and dokusan.
