Saturday dokusan (John-sensei), January 27

Saturday-morning dokusan was instituted to accommodate members who can’t make it to the regular dokusans held during the week. To participate, take a seat on the left side of the Arnold Park zendo, near the Kannon Room, any time before 10:00 am. An announcement will be made before dokusan begins.

Zen 101, Saturday, January 27, 11am – 12:30 pm

Whereas in our introductory workshops, we cover zazen basics (e.g., posture, breath practice, and kinhin), in Zen 101 we discuss the more outward forms of Zen practice, such as:

  • Prostrations: How to do them and why
  • Chanting
  • Zen terminology (e.g., Bodhisattva, Jukai, Rakusu, etc.)
  • Ceremonies (Jukai, Bodhidharma Day, the Buddha’s Birthday, etc.)
  • Anything else you’d like to know about practice: Q&A session

The program is free and is held in the Arnold Park zendo. You’re also invited to attend the informal sitting at noon, followed by lunch at 12:30.

If would like to attend, contact Trueman as soon as possible so we can get a head count for lunch. If you can’t make it in-person, the session will also be broadcast on Zoom. Contact Jissai for the codes.

Extended Sitting and Teisho by John-sensei, Sunday, January 28

Get a running start on your Term Intensive commitments by attending this extended sitting, whether in-person or on Zoom. There will be four blocks of formal sitting with Private Instruction offered in block 3.
For block 2, we’ll sit one long round with a bell at the half-way point for posture change, followed by kinhin, a short chanting service, and Sensei’s teisho.

Youth Sunday, January 28

Our Youth and Family Program (affectionately called “Zen Kids”) meets on select Sundays from 8:30-10:30 am. We welcome children of all ages to our Youth Sundays, and families are invited to stay for brunch afterwards. Contact Chris Maley to participate this coming Sunday.

Mark your calendar! Cleaning of the Temple at Arnold Park: Saturday, February 3
