Whether you’ve attended an introductory workshop or are coming to the Center from another place of practice, zendo protocol can initially seem intimidating and details can be difficult to remember.

Tuesday night orientations are offered from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (free of charge) for anyone who would benefit from a focused review of what to expect during a formal sitting, including:

  • how to how to bow,
  • how to do kinhin (walking meditation),
  • how to chant, and
  • how to do prostrations.

Attendees also become familiarized with the Dokusan Room (used for both private instruction with a senior student and dokusan with Roshi Kjolhede or Sensei Pulleyn), support cushion and robe storage area, changing rooms, and restrooms. Orientations segue directly into the Beginners’ Night sitting, where attendees can put their newly-honed skills into action.

Tuesday night orientations are offered upon request. Please let us know ahead of time by calling the Center at (585) 473-9180 before 3:00 p.m. on the day that you’d like to attend.
