Diversity Initiative
The Zen Center has appointed two people to serve as diversity co-coordinators: Donna Kowal and Dené Redding. Working together, in consultation with Roshi, they will review the Center’s introductory workshops, training programs, and everyday operations with an eye toward identifying ways of cultivating a more inclusive environment. Such efforts may include, but are not limited to, offering cultural competency training, updating applications, and improving signage. This work has already begun (for example, Center supervisors participated in an Out Alliance LGBTQ+ program at the Center this past June) and will be a continuing process. Donna and Dené have developed a working list of diversity initiatives and welcome input from the Sangha. If you have any suggestions you’d like to share, please email them at donnakowala@gmail.com and dagrange@syr.edu.
