Daylight Saving Time This Weekend
A reminder that this Sunday morning, March 10, we’ll “spring ahead,” giving back that hour gained when we “fall back” in November. We hope to see you anyway for sitting and teisho, beginning at 8:30.
Movies and Dharma: A Zen Perspective, Saturday, March 16
Sangha member and curator of the Visual Studies Workshop (VSW) Tara Nelson has been working with the Center in choosing a collection of short films that present various aspects of the Dharma. Part of VSW’s annual film series, the event will be on Saturday, March 16, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the VSW, which is located just a few blocks from the Center at 31 Prince Street. Roshi will be there to comment on the films and answer questions. There’s a suggested $5.00 donation, but Sangha members may choose to attend for free. More information is here: http://www.vsw.org/screenings/spring-2019-film-series/.
Liangong in the Buddha Hall, March 17
On Sunday March 17, at 11 a.m., Sangha member Bob Hall will conduct a brief workshop on Series 1 of Liangong Shibafa (“health exercise in 18 forms”), an exercise system that was developed largely for treating and preventing pain. Drawing on exercises both from martial arts training and from traditional Chinese healing practices, and tested on a large sample of primarily older adults in China and Japan, the 18 exercises are designed to work systematically on the major joints and muscle groups, from the neck to the feet. One set of the exercises can be completed in 15 minutes.
The exercises are done standing. Loose clothes are recommended, as are clean (this will be in the Buddha Hall), rubber-soled sport shoes (keeping the feet immobile helps to maintain proper form). The workshop will take approximately 90 minutes. Bob will stay after if there are general questions about the Liangong system, and he can be reached at rbh49@frontiernet.net.
