Morning Sittings with Chanting
Formal morning zazen consists of an hour of sitting with a bell at the halfway point (no kinhin) for change of posture, followed by a 15-minute chanting service. On Sunday there is a 50-minute sitting with a bell at the halfway point
for a change of posture, followed by kinhin, chanting and a talk (teisho
or Dharma talk).
Formal evening zazen on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays consists of three 35-minute rounds with kinhin. Daisan is offered on Tuesdays and sometimes on Friday nights. The schedule on Tuesdays, informally known as "Beginner's Night",
consists of three 25-minute rounds, followed by a chanting service.
Daisan is offered in the second round, and everyone is invited to stay
for refreshments following chanting. The zendo is open for members to come and sit informally at all times (with occasional exceptions) outside of formal sittings. There is a semi-formal sitting from noon to 12:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,
Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. You can change your posture when you wish, but
once in the zendo should remain there until the bell is struck at 12:30.
Dokusan, the private meeting with Roshi Bodhin available to members, is offered
on Monday and Thursday evenings and Wednesday mornings.
There is no work on Sunday, though attendance at sitting and teisho is required for all trainees (as are all sittings, ceremonies and other Center activities). A light brunch is served following teisho; other meals, for residents, are taken in the staff kitchen. On mornings when there is work but no formal sitting, the wake-up bell is rung at 6:30 a.m. |
