   The hon. The han hangs outside the zendo, its message reminding us to practice with vigor -- time is short!

During sittings, meditators may ask to be struck with kyasaku, or "encouragement stick"

A key part of zen practice is dokusan -- the interview with the teacher.

The lead chanter plays the bell, also known as the kesu.
