Chapin Mill Retreat Center

Chapin Mill is a 135-acre country property that was donated to the Rochester Zen Center by Ralph Chapin, one of its founding members. Ralph's vision of the land as a site for Zen training matched the decades-long dream of the Zen Center to establish a rural retreat center. This dream began to materialize, in April 2000, when the groundbreaking for the new retreat complex took place. Construction on the building, documented in our photo gallery, began in the spring of 2000.

When the professional contractors had finished the majority of their work, Zen Center staff, trainees, and local volunteers began the process of completing the building. Hammers, nails, cedar shingles, and drywall suddenly became the "skillful means" of training and practice at the Zen Center.
