Letter from Roshi Kapleau
   and Ralph Chapin

  Dear Sangha,

I want to share with all of you my enthusiasm and whole-hearted support for the Chapin Mill project. This undertaking is really the culmination of what I, and many other people, have worked towards.

Looking back on a long life, one can see what was meant to be and what was not. The Rochester Zen Center has always felt the need to build a retreat center on country land, but causes and conditions were not in our favor. Now, thanks to Ralph Chapin's magnificent gift, we are able to fulfill this dream.

As many of you know, Ralph is an old friend and played a major role in first bringing me to Rochester. So, in a sense, the wheel has turned full circle, with Ralph once again being the catalyst for great Dharma activity.

Let me also say that Bodhin-sensei is a wonderful teacher, and the ideal person to lead the way in the realization of the Chapin Mill project. What is needed now is simply the unfailing support of the Sangha.

Roshi Philip Kapleau

With the acquisition of the Chapin Mill country property we have fulfilled the long-felt need for a country retreat location complementing the Rochester Zen Center on Arnold Park. This development represents a most fitting and vibrant memorial to founding members Chester and Dorris Carlson, whose spiritual insightfulness made the establishment of a center for Zen practice a reality in western New York. We have come full circle and now move into the future as new generations take over.

From my perspective, it is now assured that the special, indescribable energy emanating from Chapin Mill, along with it's natural beauty, will be preserved for all time.

Ralph Chapin
