Youth Program

The Youth Program is a cooperative effort of the parents of the Zen Center community. Its primary purpose is to provide opportunities for social interaction amoung Sangha children, while gently introducing them to fundamental Buddhist principles. Children of members, from ages three to fifteen, are invited to participate.

The Youth Program, in its formal sense, meets approximately six Sundays each year, from September through June. On those Youth Sundays, following the formal sitting, the children join the rest of the community in the zendo, where they take part in a chanting service and listen to a short talk. Following the talk, while the adults remain to listen to the teisho or Dharma talk, the children leave the zendo to participate in age-appropriate group activities.

Each of these groups is led by several volunteer parents; the number and age-composition of the groups depends upon the children who are participating in a given year. Recent Youth Sunday activities have included making "Stone Soup" for a soup kitchen, planting flowers, cleaning up the neighborhood, and simply enjoying a sledding party. Following the group activity, the children are invited to re-join the rest of the community for a light brunch in the Zen Center dining room.

In addition to the Sunday Youth Program, the children enjoy participation in some of the Zen Center ceremonies and festivals. Activities are planned for the children duringVesak (the celebration of the Buddha's birthday), the annual summer picnic, Halloween,Thanksgiving, and New Year's Eve.
